Assemblies for Climate Uncertainty

Climate change has become a defining force of the twenty-first century, yet its impacts remain profoundly uneven. While global narratives often frame the crisis as universal, vulnerability is shaped by histories of extraction and entrenched socio-political inequalities. Contemporary climate adaptations are highly engineered, capital-intensive, and technologically driven, which serve a privileged few. 

This raises a critical question: how does the global majority navigate escalating risk and uncertainty under climate change?


Focusing on unrecognized settlements along the Yamuna River floodplain in New Delhi, this thesis documents how communities adapt their homes to extreme heat, monsoons, flooding, humidity, severe cold and pollution. Formed by migrant laborers, these neighborhoods exist within conditions of climate volatility, insecure tenure, and exclusion from formal infrastructure. In response, residents rely on an architecture of “ Jugaad / जुगाड़ (Hindi) / جگاڑ  (Urdu)”. 



A concept of non-conventional, frugal innovation in the Indian subcontinent encompassing inventive fixes, rule-bending solutions, and the creative use of available resources. Through the documentation and analysis of different building techniques across regions and the subcontinent, this research reframes these practices not as temporary improvisations but as collective, knowledge-based systems. It envisions collaborative, community-driven building strategies that are simple, resourceful and functional, that can evolve into robust, engineered solutions through a bottom-up approach to architecture.




Collective Assemblies 

The designed prototypes, walls, slabs, roofs, and various other systems, are conceived as heterogeneous assemblies that amplify the inherent properties of each material to actively perform cooling, heating, insulation, and weatherproofing. These systems are developed so they can be read and understood as individual elements, demonstrating how each functions independently. Each prototype provides an example of how available materials can be creatively used, while allowing for substitution with similar materials or ideas that follow the same underlying principles. Together, they offer the beginnings of a new vocabulary, an architectural “alphabet”, showing how different compositions can work collectively as functioning structure



Habitable Assemblies


These housing prototypes explore how individual systems, each with its own function, can work together to perform across the year, adapting to seasonal temperature shifts and climatic extremes. Varying in typology and layout, they reflect both existing community practices and proposals for more resilient living.
The five houses presented here serve as evidence and proposition, documenting construction processes, material strategies, and system integration. Through drawings and diagrams, each house demonstrates how discrete systems, structural, environmental, and social, combine to create infrastructures and spaces that respond to heat, flooding, and other climate challenges.
Together, they offer a framework for incremental, adaptable, and community-informed design, showing how architecture can support everyday life while engaging climate change as a medium rather than a problem.
