Material Resarch

Circuits, circles and loops: Towards regenerative architecture.
Harvard GSD Corss registeration.

In just two years, materials travel nearly 500,000 kilometers to meet the needs of one individual among 8 billion. On the day I moved into my house, I cataloged everything I purchased within a single day. I then analyzed the major materials in those items—for instance, the metal in my glasses and traced their journey from extraction, through manufacturing, and finally to my purchase in Cambridge (In the form of Km).
Even before extraction, the Big Bang occurred 13.7 billion years ago. Some of the metal in the Earth likely formed later with the first supernova explosion, but most metals were created then. Steel and other heavy metals carry within them the memory of the universe’s explosive origins. So, quite literally, our materials have been here since the beginning of time, traveling far longer than we often realize—perhaps even longer than we ever will.
